I came up with the idea for this tzatziki when I was working on my recipe for Grilled Chicken Shawarma Skewers. My husband was on the whole30 diet, so a traditional tzatziki made with Greek yogurt, or a tahini sauce was out of the question. I really wanted a sauce to along with the chicken and avocado seemed like a very reasonable and whole30-friendly compromise!
When whipped, ripe avocado is creamy and smooth and very much resembles a thick Greek yogurt! I add other typical tzatziki ingredients, including extra lemon juice to make it tangy. This sauce is great for those that are sensitive to dairy or wanting a plant based option!
Here’s what you need:
How to make avocado tzatziki:
First- grate your cucumber and place it into a fine mesh strainer and squeeze out any excess liquid.
Next, place avocados in the bowl of a food processor with fresh garlic, the juice from one lemon and salt. Blend on high until the avocado is light and fluffy. I do it this way in the food processor because it is the best way to get it to resemble greek yogurt. This isn’t guacamole. It isn’t meant to be chunky. It should be smooth and creamy. Put the avocado into a bowl with the grated cucumber, olive oil and fresh herbs.
Fold everything together then give it a taste. It’s obviously going to be pretty avocado-ey, which is why I then suggest adding more lemon to give it that tang like greek yogurt. Add a bit more salt if needed and that’s it. Let it hang out in the fridge for a half hour or so to let all those flavors marry!
This avocado tzatziki makes a great sauce to go with my Grilled Chicken Shawarma Skewers! I also love serving it up as an appetizer with warm pita!
